Group Discussion with Councillor Masuda

On March 19, 2015, our students had a group discussion with Mr. Korehito Masuda, a councillor at the Embassy of Japan in Mali (Ambassade du Japon au Mali). Mr. Masuda talked about current global issues, situations in Africa, the terrorist attack in Tunisia, and the present conditions of the Ebola epidemic fever from a diplomatic viewpoint. Our students could ask Mr. Masuda questions which they couldn’t ask last August when he gave us a lecture. It was a very worthwhile time for our students.

From the students’ essays

○When Mr. Masuda explained about regional situations, he firstly talked about the historical background and then the present situation. Listening to his explanation, I recognized that the past and the present are connected closely, and I want to study World History, which starts next April, hard. (a female student)

○Watching the daily news, I had a very dark impression about the Middle East region. But Mr. Masuda showed us a video in which the people are smiling and living happily there, and I was encouraged to become forward-looking. (a male student)

○I was wondering why he could work overseas in spite of the threats of terrorism and ISIS. Now I understand that it is because of Mr. Masuda’s “love for Japan” and “love for the world”. (a male student)

○I will try to get various knowledge, including global issues. As Mr. Masuda said, “Accomplish something if you intend to do so,” I made up my mind to do my best to realize my dream. (a female student)

○I learned that the Japanese government sent 30,000 suits for protection from Ebola infection. From Mr. Masuda’s talk, I also learned that it is important to understand each other’s cultures to build up the good relationship with the regional people. I will do my best for my future.
