Preface

Aomori High School is one of the oldest and most historical high schools in Aomori Prefecture. The former Aomori High School (founded as the Third Aomori Junior High School in 1900 (Meiji 33)) and the former Aomori Girls’ High School (founded as the Third Aomori Higher Girls’ School in 1907 (Meiji 40)) were unified into Aomori High School in 1950 (Showa 25).
The number of the graduates is more than 40,000. Many talented people came from our school, and they play active parts all over Aomori, Japan, and overseas. Under our three education philosophies (self-reliance and self-development, faithfulness and diligence, harmonious cooperation and responsibility), we are making continuous efforts to nurture individuals who can think about their role in the future, who have strong minds and healthy bodies, who develop their personalities, and who can contribute to society.
Our school emblem is the symbol of “infinity (‘mugen’)”, which is sung about in our school anthem. ∞ means infinity in mathematics, and the kanji character 高 (meaning ‘high’) was put in the middle of ∞. The design is very simple, but it has a profound meaning.

Facilities

The present school buildings were reconstructed in 2006 (Heisei 18). As the words in our school anthem - “in our white school buildings”- state, there are dignified white-washed school buildings on the site with a large school yard, viewing Mt. Hakkoda and Mt. Azuma-dake. In addition, there are a ‘mugen’ dome (indoor practice field), a jyudo and kendo hall, a baseball field, an athletic field, a rugby and soccer field, tennis courts, and so on. Also, there is a large library with more than 27,000 books, and we have a cafeteria and ‘Seiko Kaikan’ where students can stay. Under those favorable conditions, our students can spend their school life at ease, concentrating on studying and club activities.

Courses of study and The quotas
We have a general academic course.
The number of the students for each year is 280, and they are divided into 7 classes.(Most of the Japanese high schools, including our school, contain three grades. The total number of our students is 840.)

Learning guidance

Ninety percent of our students hope to enter national universities, other public universities, and colleges. Even among them, more than 50% of our students aim to enter highly-selective universities, such as University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Hokkaido University, and so on. Those students are making considerable efforts.

About classes

Each lesson is for 50 minutes, and there are 33 lessons a week. All of our teachers are making efforts to enhance every class and to enable students to get enough knowledge through classes at school to enter universities. Classes advance rapidly on the condition that students have done enough preparation and review at home, so students need to have self-discipline to study; otherwise they may not keep up with classes. In the first year, almost all students take the same classes to build up their fundamental knowledge. In the second and third years, according to their own decision, they are divided into two courses- a liberal arts course or a physical science course- in which they can achieve more academic development.

“Our school life in Aomori High School” by a boy student in the first grade

Hello, everyone! Students in the 9th grade of Junior High School, I guess you may be wondering which high school you should attend. What do you think Aomori High School is like? You may think it would be a very boring school, with students just studying all the time. However, it’s not like that at all. I would like to tell you our real school life!
First of all, we study a lot. You may think, “That’s what I thought!”, but the fundamental part of high school life is “studying”. It applies to the other high schools as well, not only to ours. If the foundation is stable, our school life will be enriched.
Secondly, we participate in club activities. The club activities of Aomori High School are so active. Ninety percent of our students belong to club activities and enjoy it every day. Our ideal is “to do our best in both studying and sports.” It is important for us to switch our focus towards studying at home soon after finishing club activities.
However, if we always continue our strained life, which goes like this: studying, club activities studying again… we would get so stressed. To avoid that, we have a lot of school events, such as Seiko-sai (Annual School Festival in July), Taiiku- sai (Athletic Meet in June), and so on. We have lots of fun at those events.
Aomori High School loves festivals. Our school schedule is really busy, but we feel such fulfillment that we cannot experience anywhere else. We are looking forward to seeing you and those who want to have an exciting life with us at Aomori High School!
