Visit to Robert D. Edgren High School

On January 8, 2015, 34 students in the first grade worked on interviews with the students of Robert D. Edgren High School at Misawa Air Base.

One of the aims of this interview program is “to enhance the ability to recognize problems and set tasks based on understanding different viewpoints and different cultural backgrounds through communicating with people from different countries.”

To achieve this goal, our students made pairs and interviewed American students, explaining the reason why they visited here, introducing Aomori culture to them, asking their impressions of it, and asking questions along with their own research themes. For example, they talked about their club activities, their preference of music, the different road rules between Japan and America, and so on.

As a result, more or less, our students had good and positive impressions. They wrote in their reports, “I can make myself understood in English”, “I can understand what they say”, and “I need to study harder and expand my vocabulary to discuss things deeply.” (Please see attached.)

Through this experience, our students learned that English is an important way of communication and recognized that they need the ability to discuss in English to be global leaders in the future.

We would like to thank the principal, all the teachers and students of Robert D. Edgren High School, and especially Mrs. Masako Saito, Vice President of Aomori International Relations Volunteer Association (AIVA), for organizing everything on this interview program.
